In the event of a 'dirty bomb' attack a real problem exists from the wide distribution of radioactive, biological, or chemical toxins that would pose a long-term danger. Emergency personnel must be able to immediately detect and identify the agent, and map the boundaries of the event. In the case of a large-scale event, making a quick identification of the agent will save valuable time and help prevent unnecessary casualties.
Our customer was seeking to meet those market requirements through the development of a hand-held, ruggedized, multi-sensor threat monitoring/mapping system for use over large areas. This system would provide rapid detection and mapping of a suite of radiological, chemical and biological agents.
Appling SKF Knowledge and combining this with our technology building blocks, Condition Monitoring Centre ( Livingston ) Ltd developed a proto-type custom rugged hand-held device which displays the intensity of contamination while recording geographic information that allows emergency personnel to rapidly isolate the contaminated areas. And just as the navigation software assists emergency personnel in locating the event, the same program will then also lead them back to safety.
In the event of a radiation or chemical-biological attack, Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) navigation software will lead emergency personnel, whether on foot or in a vehicle, to the affected area. When the system is mobilized, GPS data and contamination intensity will be continuously measured and transmitted to a central information or mobile command center via wireless network communications (GPRS or 802.11a,b,g). Data can be displayed on a map of the area so that the areas of intensity will be clearly visible. In fact, emergency decisions can be implemented even before a map is completed due to the real-time nature of the detection and high speed wireless data transfer.
