Siemens wanted a device which had to be capable of creating a user experience equal or better to anything that could be achieved by a laptop PC but had to be able to withstand a full 2m drop test and be fully sealed to IP65. So the search began for a partner capable of designing such innovative devices that could meet these demands
Siemens initially approached SKF CMC Livingston after seeing the companies' capability to design rugged Windows CE based handheld computers.
SKF CMC Livingston was told by several professional organisations that to design a device that could meet the stringent drop test criteria with a full VGA display was impossible! The test itself is very rigorous and involves dropping 5 units a total of 26 times. This covers every corner, edge and face of the unit! Each drop is performed onto concrete.
To achieve the impossible, SKF designed an innovative 'cradle' to house the delicate display and backlight assembly. Once in place, the cradle allows the assembly to travel up to 5mm during an impact, absorbing the energy and protecting the display.
The MOBIC is now manufactured by Siemens, and the product is available through them, or through SKF CMC Livingston.

Thin Client Utilisation
MOBIC's ThinClient functionality enables direct access to Windows NT or Windows 2000 applications, and also to UNIX or MAC servers. MOBIC visualizes the applications while the software itself executes on the server. This makes it easy to access existing software and utilize a server's full performance capabilities.
